Cold weather brings people indoors. Cold weather also causes pests to seek shelter indoors. What could be worse than pests ruining your great time spent indoors? Pests such as rats, mice, cockroaches and some species of spiders need to find shelter in the winter in order to survive. For this reason, they seek shelter in your home. These pests pose risks not only to your home but to people as well. Follow these few tips to help prevent your home from fall pests:
1) Keep leaves and debri away from home structure, roof, and lawn
2) Keep counters clean
- Crumbs and a buildup of garbage attract pests who are scavenging for food. It is recommended to clean up after each meal and to properly close garbage cans when they are stored in the home or garage.
3) Seal cracks and crevices
- Pay close attention to where utility pipes meet your home. Seal any cracks or crevices with caulk and steel wool.
4) Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the home
5) Keep crawl space dry
- Make sure to frequently inspect the crawl space for proper moisture levels. Cold weather often brings high moisture levels in the crawl space. Pest professionals have the knowledge to help you determine what measures are necessary to adjust your crawl space levels if you need additional assistance.
6) Have a proper outdoor drainage system
7) Install door sweeps and repair damaged screens
