The little black ant gets its common name from being very small, along with its black color. Their colonies can vary in size from moderate to very large and contains many queens. Swarms of little black ants are common from about June to August, during which they feed and follow in trails, and are commonly found along sidewalks. These ants feed on grease, oil, meats, fruits, and vegetables.
Little black ants typically nest in woodwork, masonry, decaying wood, walls, and cement, but are commonly seen indoors as well. They are known to nest in soil and under yard debris. If you are experiencing little black ants in your home or business, it’s more than likely due to improper food storage.
The first step to prevent and control little black ants begins with an inspection provided by your pest management professional. After conducting the inspection, your pest professional will provide quality recommendations for your home and how to efficiently deal with the infestation at hand. One of the first signs your pest professional will look for are ways to exclude ants like sealing cracks and gaps in the exterior walls and in the foundation. They will also provide proactive solutions and recommendations such as removing and discarding decaying wood, firewood, and other debris found on the property.
