December is upon us and that means all the decorating will soon be underway. Are you team "real" or team "fake" when it comes to your Christmas tree? Both can have their advantages and disadvantages and usually we stick with what we grew up with.
If you are the family that enjoys bringing in a real tree, we wanted to give you a few things to be looking for to make sure you aren't bringing in any unwanted guests inside that tree!
Every Christmas tree can harbor insects, mites, or spiders. Some of these pests may have gone dormant for the winter and could become active after being exposed to the warm temperatures inside the home.
One way to prevent these tree invaders from coming in your home is the mechanical tree shaker many christmas tree farms have. Shaking your tree will dislodge the bugs and nests that may have made a home in your christmas tree. Another option is to spray the tree with a garden hose to help knock off more pests.
The good news is, these bugs are not harmful to you or your home - they just aren't something you want invading your house! Aphids are the most common bug you would find on your tree, as they love to nest for the winter in conifers.
As much as you may be tempted, one thing we will caution you on is spraying any sort of aerosol or insecticide on your tree since they could be flammable with your christmas lights. If you happen to see these bugs coming out of your tree, the good ole fashioned vaccum should do the trick to getting them out.
If you need us to talk through any Christmas tree bug infestations with you, feel free to give us a call!
